Do you feel tired all the time?

Do you often ask yourself, “Why am I always tired and fatigued” or “Why am I always tired and have no energy?” or even, “Why am I still tired after 8 hours of sleep?”.

If so, then you suffer from sleep deprivation.

The good news is that there a plenty of things you can do to rid yourself of any sleep issues you have, make sure that you get the right amount of sleep, and begin to feel a whole lot better.

By changing just a few parts of your bedtime routine and lifestyle choices you can enjoy a happier, healthier, more rested sleep experience.

What is sleep deprivation?

Sleep deprivation is a condition resulting from inadequate sleep duration or poor sleep quality. It can be acute or chronic and affects cognitive functions, mood, and overall health.

Symptoms include fatigue, irritability, and impaired concentration. Chronic sleep deprivation increases the risk of serious health issues such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes.

Causes range from lifestyle choices and stress to medical conditions and sleep disorders. Proper sleep hygiene and addressing underlying causes are essential for recovery.

Tips on dealing with sleep deprivation

The great news is that you can help yourself escape from the misery of sleep deprivation by making some small, easy-to-follow and easy-to-implement changes. Here are just a few.

1. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule

Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends, to regulate your body’s internal clock.

This might seem challenging – especially if you have difficulties getting to sleep. One of the most common questions we receive from people seeking our help with sleep is, “Why can’t I sleep at night even when I’m tired?”.

The first step is to undertake to establish that sleep routine by, whenever possible, going to bed and waking up at around the same time each day.

2. Create a relaxing bedtime routine

Before bed, engage in calming activities such as reading, taking a warm bath, or practising mindfulness meditation to signal to your body that it’s time to sleep.

In the same way as you might prepare to exercise by stretching and warming up, it’s important to prepare yourself for a great sleep.

3. Limit exposure to screens

Avoid screens from phones, tablets, and computers at least an hour before bedtime, as the blue light emitted can interfere with your ability to fall asleep.

If you use your devices to read before bed – then you can change the settings on them to filter the blue light or purchase special eye glasses that can do the same.

4. Optimise your sleep environment

Ensure your bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet. Use blackout curtains if you have light invading the darkness of your room and perhaps earplugs in the event that there is noise outside your room that disturbs you.

Do whatever is necessary to create an ideal sleeping environment.

5. Watch your diet and caffeine Intake

Avoid large meals, sugar, processed or starchy carbs, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime.

These can disrupt your sleep cycle and make it harder to fall asleep and harder to stay asleep.
