“Ah the joy of the cheeky fag. Whether it’s a rollie on the back doorstep once the kids are in bed, or lighting up on a rare night out with your best mate, there is something deliciously illicit and undeniably satisfying about smoking an occasional cigarette…..

It was towards the end of last year that I started to wonder if my light smoking habit was ‘safe’….

But stopping should be easy, right? As I wasn’t actually ‘addicted’, like a ‘real’ smoker. In fact, no. Smoking for me went deeper than I’d expected. It was bound up with my idea of the younger me, the more fun me…..

‘For casual smokers, the psychological attachment, rather than physical addiction, is the issue,’ says Colleen Dwyer, a therapist at Allen Carr’s Easyway to Stop Smoking clinics. ‘There are different types of casual smoker, but the one thing that connects all of them is the psychological association with good times.’ That described me perfectly…….
