New trail from 16 million patients shows increased hair loss

Weight loss drugs like Wegovy have grown in popularity in recent years but, as with all drugs, side effects are being seen.

During clinical trials of Wegovy, hair loss was seen to be three times higher than in the placebo group. This was also seen amongst children and teenagers.

A new study has been released with similar findings, indicating an increased risk of hair loss associated with Semaglutide. This is the active ingredient found in the weight loss drug Wegovy and diabetes treatment Ozempic.

The current study investigated data from 16 million patients from 2006 to 2020, and found patients on Semaglutide at a 52% higher risk of hair loss compared to those on an older weight loss pill, Contrave. This was after adjusting for ages, gender, location and underlying health conditions.

Interestingly, the study found the risk of hair loss among female patients taking Semaglutide to be more than double that of females on Contrave.

Unanswered questions remain, such as whether the hair loss risk decreases after patients stop taking Semaglutide and whether these drugs cause nutrients deficiency. Additional research will also reveal whether the increased risk of hair loss also applies to males.
