The Growing Worldwide Team – New Zealand

We are so fortunate to have such an amazing group of people within Allen Carr’s Easyway organisation across the world. People who want to find out how to stop smoking easily sometimes find it really hard to imagine that it is possible. They are so used to attempts to quit smoking ending up feeling like a never-ending fight that leaves them feeling miserable and deprived of cigarettes. In their search for a way to stop smoking it can often be inspiring for them to hear how our team around the world has been brought together. This is another installment in a series of features that look at the journeys taken by members of Allen Carr’s Easyway To Stop Smoking Therapist team; from being some of the most prolific smokers on the planet to becoming happy non-smokers and world-leaders in the field of stopping smoking.

Vickie Macrae, Allen Carr’s Easyway New Zealand writes:

I first started smoking at the age of 13 – behind the coal sheds at school with a few of my girlfriends. We’d practise smoking so we could be “cool” when we did it at the back of the bus the boys who smoked.

For 30 years I deluded myself that it was cool to smoke. My cousin once told me I was too strong willed to give up and that sucked me along in its wake for years – kidding myself I was cool and strong-willed because I smoked. But underneath all that was desperation to be free because deep down I felt I was really weak willed and pathetic for smoking. I certainly wasn’t the “care free girl” I had once been.

I had many failed attempts to “give up” some lasting a few months (pregnancies), some a few days and for many years I went to bed every night praying for the willpower to resist the desire to smoke in the morning. I got hooked on Nicorette chewing gum and tried every method to stop smoking you could imagine (and some you’d find hard to believe).

Eventually someone gave me a copy of Allen Carr’s Easyway to Stop Smoking book as a Christmas present – I really didn’t think it was going to work. To my surprise – not only did I stop smoking but I was transformed into a truly strong willed, confident, and happy person. I’d had no idea how much harm smoking had done to my self esteem. A short while later I applied to Allen Carr’s Easyway organisation to join their amazing worldwide network of therapists and I’m proud to be helping ensure that Allen’s legacy achieves it’s full potential.
